Aragami is one of the stealth games I've played where I DON'T just load my last save when getting caught because escaping actually feels intense and strategic. You can dodge the light blades with your teleport, you can still kill enemies while they're alerted. So I won't say "yeah get rid of those cheap quick saves," but I can't fault Aragami for something that ended up enhancing my stealth experience.Īnd you absolutely can defend yourself in Aragami, something I've bafflingly seen one review already not even realize. I know some people are adamantly against PC games not having quick save unless the game is clearly designed around checkpoints (Dark Souls), but Aragami made me actually play through and think about each part one section at a time, rather than save scumming past every single guard. But in stealth games, it's hard not to abuse that feature and so allow yourself to get sloppy. And I appreciate having the option to quick save in my PC games. Manual saves I really appreciate in Thief, as the levels can be incredibly complex and unforgiving, so I don't want to have to redo 40 minutes of exploration for one mistake or janky missed jump. The game is balanced around those limitations, they aren't a flaw or an oversight. It is a little tedious to have to dissolve every single body, but if you killed a guard in the bright light, guess what? Your fault, again, for not playing within the rules set for your character who is almost literally made of shadows. There's no jump to escape and the game is designed around that. If you used your powers too much and find yourself low right when a guard turns towards you, that's your problem. If you're in a brightly-lit area, you have no power and therefore can't jump. You can't jump because traversal is based entirely around resource management and context. I'm a pretty big stealth player, and aside from the story, Aragami was a lot of what I wanted. I just feel that a lot of the problems people have with it are not really problems. I don't understand why people dislike that. Aragami is very clearly marketed as a pure stealth game all the way. Clearly Lince Works feel the same, and designed the game to be that way. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that in every stealth game the moment I get caught I reload checkpoint. To me, that seems like a complaint that only someone who doesn't actually like stealth games would have. Some people seem to really have an issue with the fact that you're completely unable to defend yourself after getting caught. The biggest complaint that I just don't get is that stealth is the only option. That's where the satisfaction of going completely undetected comes from. They're about experimenting and failing until you figure out how to get through an area, and then managing to execute for a decent stretch without messing up. Stealth games are a lot like speed run games to me. The only thing that would stop a player from doing that is their own personal honor code or whatever, which is ridiculous. You'd never die, and there'd be no feeling of triumph for defeating a boss because you just loaded your save any time you made a mistake in the fight. Imagine a Dark Souls game with quick saves. All they do is allow save scumming, completely removing any difficulty or sense of achievement. I'm just going to say, manual saves are terrible, universally. One complaint I saw was that Aragami uses checkpoints over manual saves. If you could then the level design might fall apart. But it's designed that way! You're not supposed to be able to get there like that. Perhaps in sitautions where there is a nearby ledge that would be within jump distance, but you can't get to because it's in light. The levels are so built around the shadow teleport that I can't even see a single point where I felt like I needed a jump. The game is very explicitly designed to allow the player to traverse without needing to jump. Plenty of great third person games, and other great stealth games are the same. Things like the fact that Aragami can't jump being treated like a major problem is ridiculous to me. A lot of the complaints I've been seeing seem completely unfair, incorrect, or misguided. While a lot of people seem to be liking the game, I was surprised at how much negative feedback the game was getting from some places, especially ones coming from "stealth fans".
